Outside of the Office:
5 Non-Dental Facts About Me
I love to travel and try out different cuisines around the world. Yes, I am a huge "foodie"
I used to compete in classical piano competitions and practiced 6 hours a day in the summer to prepare for it. I had won first place for the piece: Waltz in C Sharp Minor (Op. 64 No. 2) by Chopin, which is also my favorite classical piano piece!
I named my dog, a Norwich Terrier, Jack, after the character from the movie, Titanic. It was one of the few movies I went to see twice in the theaters.
I am a huge Disney fan. I collect Disney mugs and I'm happy to be practicing in Florida -as I am close to the "happiest place on earth".
I LOVE art -- especially painting and I love visiting museums. During high school, I was the president of Art Club for years and would sometimes skip lunch to do more art.
My Approach:
Team Work
"No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it." -- H.E. Luccock
Being a classical piano player since age six, this quote resonates with me and truly defines teamwork. This doesn't apply only to music but I find it very fitting for dentistry as well. I am a believer that we are stronger together. I believe that clear communication with team members, patients, and referring doctors is essential in the success of treatment and live by this principle.
Periodontitis is COMPLEX
Periodontitis is the INFLAMMATORY DESTRUCTION of the supporting tissues around the teeth and it is not to be taken likely. Think of it as a chronic inflammation that your body harbors -- and the scary part is, most of the time, it does NOT hurt until it's at a severe stage. Oral microbiome, host immune system and personal hygiene play significant role in maintaining the "homeostasis". When this homeostatic balance is disturbed, this imbalance may be due to either hyper or hypo-responsiveness and/or lack of adequate resolution of inflammation which is greatly responsible for the destruction seen in periodontitis. Thus, brushing and flossing are important but lifestyle changes such as stress reduction, exercise and diet play a role in this complex disease as well!
Learning Never Stops
Lifelong learning is important as we all know that new technologies, techniques are constantly emerging. I am a contributing writer for the Facebook group "Dental Clinical Pearls" as a periodontist where I share my knowledge in periodontics by posting weekly pearls and also learn from other colleagues from all areas of dentistry. Moreover, I keep up with my reading of the literature, go to conferences and attend courses to keep up to date!
